Pula, Croatia

We got on a ferry that would take us from Venice to Pula, Croatia. The only seats left on the ferry were in the front row. As we sat down I noticed a sign that said “We recommend that you buckle your seat belt if you are seated in the front row.” Yeah right. Changed my mind quickly when we hit the first enormous wave and I flew three feet in the air, crashing down with my elbow on the metal armrest. Spent the next THREE hours belted firmly in with my feet braced against the wall…desperately clinging to the armrest. At about 30 minutes into the trip the air con appeared to go out, the room got unbearably hot and the barfing began. I would estimate that 90% of the boat used a barf bag. Needless to say, we were happy to reach land in Croatia…an hour late and exhausted beyond belief.

The view from our patio. The coast of Croatia is beautiful….pebble beaches, olive trees and the smell of pine in the air.

A 1st-century Roman amphitheatre overlooking the harbor. It had seating for up to 20,000 spectators and was designed to host gladiatorial contests. They still use it every summer for plays and concerts.

A scary Croatian man who posed for pictures in his gladiator costume. He was no Russell Crowe.

The Triumphal Arch of Sergius in Old Town. The town was surrounded by walls and a city gate that were later pulled down to allow the city to expand. Old Town is full of shops, cafes and restaurants. A great place to grab a latte and watch the crowds go by.

The ancient Forum, the towns central meeting place. The only remnant left from the Roman era is the Temple of Augustus.

The coast is a very popular holiday destination. You can dive, snorkel, sail or just lay in the sun. We intend to do some of that in the coming weeks! Now on to the old Austrian resort town of Opatija.
